“The Will of the Father”

Matthew 7:21, 24-27

“Not every one who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Every one then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house upon the rock; and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And every one who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house upon the sand; and the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell; and great was the fall of it.”

When we call out to the Lord in prayer, are we speaking to Him with true faith or just enough faith so we think we won’t be left out or left behind?  Jesus tells us not all who call on Him will enter the Kingdom of heaven; but why?  Because those who are hypocrites, who do not do the will of the Father, who live in this world and by its rules rather than God’s, will be left outside the Kingdom.  God invites us all into the Kingdom with Him, yet He will only let in those who truly demonstrate their love for Him by doing God’s work here on earth.  If we love the Father, we will do good works – but it is not by works alone that we are justified.  We must have true faith.

Every time we go to Mass we are given the Word of God. But during the Liturgy of the Word, are we just hearing the words or are we listening? Listening is active, it is hearing the words and acknowledging what they are saying.  A child can hear us say, “clean up your room,” but they must act in order for us to know they are listening. When Jesus tells us to love one another, it means we are to act with love towards each other. When Jesus tells us to turn away from sin, it means all sin; not just the “big sins” or the ones you choose to obey. Build your faith on the solid rock of Jesus and not the sand of this world.

Pray:

Come Holy Spirit.  Please help me to listen to the Word of God, and act upon what is said.  Help me to build my faith on the solid rock of God’s love, and not in the sands of this world.  I ask this in the name of Jesus Christ.  Amen.
