“Revealed to Babes”

Luke 10:21-24

In that same hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to babes; yea, Father, for such was thy gracious will.  All things have been delivered to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and any one to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”

Then turning to the disciples he said privately, “Blessed are the eyes which see what you see! For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.”

Throughout the Gospels we get several glimpses into the prayers of Jesus, and this one does not disappoint. Jesus reveals that His ways have been hidden from those who seek worldly wisdom. God isn’t impressed with how much a person knows, rather He is impressed with love for Him and others. It is the wise, those who think they know it all, that are made fools, and the foolish of this world, who will be made wise.  In reading the Bible and practicing our faith, we come to know that the way of the world is not God’s way.

Today, we are so focused on being smart in the “age of technology.”  We want our kids to do be smart so they can lead successful lives, and we want them to marry someone smart so they can live comfortably. There is nothing wrong with being smart, or “educated.” Our learned faculties must be focused on God, the true source of wisdom and knowledge.

Jesus reveals to us that all things have been given to Him by His Father. Just as a father will hand an inheritance down to his children, God has also handed all He has to His Son. Jesus also tells us that the only person who really knows God is His own Son, and the Son is the one who knows God.  This tells us how intimate the Holy Trinity is. Separate in persons, yet together as One in nature. The only way we will get to know who the Father is through Jesus. As babes, we know our Heavenly Father by the love that is shown to us through His people, particularly, through His Son.

Pray:

Jesus, I ask you to make me wise in the ways of your Father.  Help me recognize the difference between the ways of this world and Your ways. Please count me and my family among your elect so that you may continue to reveal your Father to us. I ask this in your wise name, Jesus.  Amen.
